The Nikkei News tracked and analyzed the manufacturing process of Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max. It turns out that the total cost of all components of the machine is about $558 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 4079 yuan), which is 12% more than that of iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In terms of components, the cost of the telephoto lens is 3.80 times that of last year, reaching $30; the titanium fuselage costs $50, which is 43% more expensive than the previous stainless steel. The cost of the A17 Pro chip is $130, up 27% from the A16.

The 3nm process used by the A17 Pro is significantly higher than the A16 Bionic based on 4nm, but this is not the most surprising, as Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 released in 2022 is even more expensive.

According to the Nikkei News, the manufacturing cost of the A16 Bionic is about $110 and that of the A17 Pro is about $130, with a difference of only $20, and they believe the tech giant may have split the cost by increasing the size of shipments.

By contrast, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 costs about $160, significantly higher than the A17 Pro. However, the $160 may also include the cost of parts such as baseband.

More interestingly, the A17 Pro is only used for Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, while Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is currently used in millions of Android smartphones, but it is still more expensive than the A17 Pro.

Of course, most Android phone makers can only buy Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which may not be unacceptable to some, but if you take into account the rumor that Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will cost more than Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it will only become more difficult for Qualcomm's partners to adjust their profit margins.
