Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) in an effort to crack down on the "grey market" in Mexico, Samsung will begin locking phones that are illegally imported and sold in the country. CTOnews.com noted that Motorola had previously implemented similar measures.
Samsung said it would lock up illegally imported phones activated in Mexico in the past three weeks from Wednesday. "in Samsung Mexico, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our users and complying with local regulations when we operate in each country," the company said. from October 11, smartphones from the grey market will be locked, which have been activated in Mexico since September 21, 2023. "
In addition, the company also said that for users affected by the lock, it will provide a 30% discount coupon, which can be used on its official website, which is valid until December 31, 2023.
The so-called grey market has become a big headache for Mexican mobile phone manufacturers, with some brands importing 1/4 of their phones illegally, according to industry data. These devices are introduced into Mexico by third parties and are usually sold at lower prices, but do not meet local standards and may pose risks; the problem has become so serious that manufacturers are now not only by locking the machine, but also seeking to change the law to ban them.
In fact, in mid-February this year, Samsung began sending messages to users of illegally imported mobile phones warning them that their phones did not comply with Mexican regulations; in July last year, Motorola became the first company to block the grey market to buy equipment.
At the time, Daniel P é rez-Cirera Santacruz, Samsung's legal director in Mexico, said they found that 15 to 20 per cent of Samsung phones sold in Mexico came from the grey market, a figure that changed from month to month; for other companies, however, the figure could be as high as 25 per cent.
Samsung also said it would conduct a communication campaign to warn users of the consequences of buying grey-market phones, which its manufacturers and industry participants would also participate.
It is reported that Samsung and Motorola account for nearly half of smartphone sales in Mexico, and more companies are expected to take such measures.
