CTOnews.com, Oct. 15, Meta recently unveiled its latest virtual reality headset, Quest 3, which was dismantled by the iFixit team to explore its internal structure and maintenance difficulties.

The biggest change for Quest 3 compared to Quest 2 is that its body is 40% thinner, thanks to the use of pancake lenses, which greatly shortens the distance between them and the display screen. The Quest 3 is also equipped with a larger battery-the 19.44Wh, while the Quest 2 has only 14WhWhWhWhmurf-powered its more powerful chips and sensors, including two color cameras, four tracking cameras and a depth sensor.

The disassembly of the iFixit shows that as the fuselage becomes thinner and the battery becomes larger, after removing the front panel, you can see that the battery takes up most of the internal space. The Quest 3's fuselage (excluding masks and headbands) weighs 397g, of which batteries account for a large proportion.

CTOnews.com noted that some other headsets, such as the Quest Pro and Pico 4, put batteries in the back of the headband to reduce facial weight, while Apple's Vision Pro uses an external battery directly to completely reduce the weight of the head.

The iFixit team also dismantled Quest Pro last year. Interestingly, they found that the Quest 3's depth sensor could fit right into a slot over the Quest Pro, which was originally reserved for the depth sensor, but Meta cancelled it a few months before the release. According to iFixit, the cable on the depth sensor can even match the connector on the Quest Pro motherboard.

IFixit gave Quest 3 a maintenance difficulty score of 4 out of 10, arguing that the equipment lacked maintenance manuals, spare parts and maintenance awareness design.
