CTOnews.com, October 15 (Xinhua)-- Alexander Burton, an Australian design student, has invented a device that can convert gasoline or diesel cars into hybrid cars at a lower cost, and has won the Australian national James Dyson Design Award, dezeen reported.

Burton found that the current average cost of converting a fuel vehicle into an electric car is A $50,000 (CTOnews.com Note: about RMB 231000), so it is only suitable for "expensive classic cars", so it has developed a low-cost "fuel to mix" device, which it says is expected to sell for as little as A $5000 (currently about RMB 23050) and is compatible with almost any car.

Specifically, the device, called REVR, installs an axial flux motor between the car's rear wheel and disc brake, and a battery and electric control system in the spare tire slot or trunk. He said that the motor has the characteristics of flat, compact and high power density.

According to reports, this device can provide 100 kilometers of pure electric mileage for traditional fuel vehicles, which is expected to extend the life of existing cars by several years. Burton believes that this is where people can get the "biggest benefit" from it: they can reduce a lot of emissions without drastically reinventing their cars.
