CTOnews.com, Oct. 14 (Reuters)-US investigators have proposed a $270000 fine on Ultium Cells, a joint venture battery factory between General Motors and LG Energy Solution in Ohio, for violating safety and health regulations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigators investigated the cause of the explosion and fire at the Ultium Cells plant in March, prompting the agency to issue 19 safety and health violations, including 17 serious violations.

OSHA inspectors found that the company failed to train workers in safety and emergency response procedures and did not comply with federal standards for the use of personal protective equipment, thus putting workers at risk.

Ultium Cells said it had "taken security issues seriously and asked for a hearing with OSHA." OSHA issued a hazard warning letter asking the company to voluntarily reduce the accumulation of metal dust and protect employees from unsafe metal dust exposure.

OSHA said Ultium needs to install the necessary machine protection, train workers in hazardous energy control and emergency response procedures, and make other changes.
