The results are published this month in the journal Science. The result is led by the Quantum Nanoscience Center of the Korea Institute of basic Sciences (IBS), with the participation of scientists from Japan, Spain and the United States.
This paper emphasizes that this micro quantum platform will not compete with the mainstream quantum computing, but it still attracts the attention of many quantum scientists and can be used to study the quantum properties of chemical elements and even molecules in the future.
It is considered that a single electron spin in a solid is a promising candidate in quantum science and technology. The electron spin has only two values of "up" and "down", corresponding to the "0" and "1" of the classical bits. the electron spin is in a variety of possible superposition states before measurement.
The researchers first scattered titanium atoms on a flat surface made of magnesium oxide, and then used the tip of the STM probe to move the titanium atoms, arranging three of them into triangles. Using microwave signals emitted at the tip of STM, the researchers were able to control the spin of a single electron in one of the titanium atoms.
Three titanium atoms are arranged in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), close enough to sense each other's quantum spins. The iron atom glued to the tip (top) of the STM "talks" to one of the qubits (blue), using it to read and write information about the other two qubits (red) and make them perform basic quantum calculations.
By properly adjusting the frequency of the microwave, they can also make the spin of the microwave interact with the spin of the other two titanium atoms.
Using this method, the team created a simple quantum operation performed by two qubits and read out the results. The whole operation takes several nanoseconds and is faster than most other types of qubits.
