Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com More than 30 victims of alleged stalker threats using Apple AirTags joined a class action lawsuit filed in California court last December. Apple has until Oct. 27 to respond to the amended complaint, according to court documents.

In a revised complaint, they claim that AirTags, due to Apple's negligence, have become "one of the most dangerous and frightening technologies used by stalkers" because they can be easily, inexpensively and secretly used to "determine real-time location information and track victims." "

CTOnews.com notes that since the lawsuit was first filed in 2022, plaintiffs claim that "numerous reports" show AirTags are frequently used for tracking. As of April 2022, international AirTags tracking cases have surged, with U.S. police receiving more than 150 reports. The complaint alleges that there have been 19 recent cases of AirTags stalking in just one metropolitan area in the United States (Tulsa, Oklahoma).

Plaintiffs say Apple didn't do enough to mitigate the harm, and AirTags tracking could result in financial loss because victims incur high costs, such as hiring someone to disassemble a car to find AirTags or moving repeatedly.

Plaintiffs claim that AirTags stalking can also lead to violence and even murder, and that the problem may be more serious than anyone thinks because stalking has historically been underestimated.

LaPrecia Sanders, a plaintiff from Indiana, lost her son because his girlfriend allegedly used AirTag to track his whereabouts and then "followed him to a bar, ran him over with a car and killed him on the spot."

Most plaintiffs live in the United States, claiming AirTags 'stalking practices in 20 states caused significant costs and harm. Two plaintiffs reside in Canada, including one who has just graduated from high school and one who currently resides in Ireland.

Many reported that stalkers who used AirTags were abusive partners or ex-partners-hiding AirTags in purse liners, car wheel wells, or even sewn into children's teddy bears-but others reported being stalked by "mystery people" with unknown motives.

Their complaint states: "AirTag distinguishes itself from any competitor's product by its unmatched accuracy, ease of use (it fits seamlessly into Apple's existing products) and affordable price. "Priced at just $29, it has become the weapon of choice for stalkers and abusers. "
