CTOnews.com news on October 13, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) today issued a notice on matters relating to the testing of the ability of wireless LAN equipment to support the IPv6 protocol in the model approval of radio transmitting equipment (hereinafter referred to as "the notice").

The Circular requires that the production or import of IPv6 wireless LAN equipment sold or used in China must apply for and obtain a type approval certificate for radio transmission equipment from the state radio administrative agency in accordance with the relevant regulations, and comply with the relevant radio management requirements such as the notice on strengthening and standardizing the Radio Management of 2400MHz, 5100MHz, and 5800MHz Frequency bands.

IPv6 wireless LAN devices should support and enable the IPv6 address allocation function by default, while retaining the option for users to configure the IPv6 address allocation function by themselves, and specify the IPv6 configuration method in the product description.

In addition, the testing institution that undertakes the task of type approval testing of WLAN equipment shall have the ability to test the IPv6 protocol and carry out the type approval test in accordance with the technical requirements and testing methods listed in this notice.

Technical requirements for the ability of CTOnews.com attached WLAN devices to support IPv6 protocol:

(1) Wireless LAN devices with public network IP address allocation function must support IPv6 protocol and enable IPv6 function by default.

(2) the wireless LAN equipment with public network IP address allocation function works in layer 2 bridging mode, and the equipment must support the transparent transmission of IPv6 data packets.

(3) the wireless LAN equipment with public network IP address assignment function works in three-layer routing mode, and the equipment must support the allocation of IPv6 addresses to access users and the forwarding of user IPv6 data packets.

The notice also mentions that basic telecom operators should support and encourage users to access the Internet through IPv6 wireless LAN devices, while users can still access the Internet through other existing wireless LAN devices.

The "Circular" points out that the radio administrative agencies of provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government should strengthen the supervision and inspection of the production and sale of IPv6 wireless LAN equipment, and investigate and deal with IPv6 wireless LAN equipment that do not comply with the relevant provisions of radio management.

CTOnews.com learned from the official website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that the notice will enter into force on December 1, 2023. Previously manufactured or imported WLAN equipment can continue to be sold and used until it is scrapped.

According to the official explanation of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, starting from December 1, 2023, when applying for approval of wireless LAN equipment models, enterprises shall conduct IPv6 protocol capability tests in accordance with the technical requirements and test methods stipulated in this Circular. At the same time, from this date, the relevant enterprises shall stop producing or importing wireless LAN equipment that does not meet the requirements of this notice.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also said that after the promulgation of the notice, it will not affect users' use of wireless LAN devices.
