CTOnews.com, Oct. 13, according to the electrek website, an indictment from Vermont recently showed that a man was sentenced to four years in prison for swindling Tesla out of five new cars.

According to screenshots from the ▲ electrek website, the incident originated from the remains of a burnt Tesla Model X found on Lake Champlain, frozen in Vermont, in 2019, when it was speculated to be an insurance fraud. In 2021, federal prosecutors in Vermont filed charges against Michael Gonzalez, a 32-year-old man from Colchester, Vermont, and finally revealed the full picture of the case.

Between September 2018 and January 2021, Gonzalez acquired five Tesla cars worth about $607000 from dealers in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Florida, according to the indictment. (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 4.437 million yuan). Gonzalez made a down payment of about $2500 (currently about 18275 yuan) for each car and then tied it to an underfunded or fictional account.

Gonzalez received the vehicles from Tesla before Tesla discovered that he had failed to complete the final payment, and he resold or tried to resell four of the five cars.

The Model X found on the frozen lake mentioned earlier on the ▲ source Tesla's official website is the fifth and last Tesla car Gonzalez plans to sell. However, he failed to complete the sale and decided to burn it, eventually filing a fraudulent insurance claim.

Michael Gonzalez was sentenced to 48 months in prison on October 11, 2023 after pleading guilty to five counts of possessing and dealing with stolen vehicles across state boundaries, according to the Vermont district attorney's office.
