CTOnews.com, Oct. 13 (Reuters)-Apple and its Wi-Fi chip supplier Broadcom have reached an agreement with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to end a seven-year legal dispute over wireless patents.

The three parties did not disclose the terms of the settlement, but Caltech abandoned its current and future litigation against Apple and Broadcom in the event of prejudice (damage or deprivation of legal rights or privacy).

The dispute dates back to 2016, when Caltech accused Apple and Broadcom of infringing their Wi-Fi patents on products such as iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, including encoding and decoding circuits used to improve data transmission and performance.

Apple eventually filed a counterclaim in an attempt to invalidate the patents, but the strategy was unsuccessful. In 2020, the jury found that Apple and Broadcom did infringe the California Institute of Technology patents. Apple was ordered to pay $838 million, while Broadcom was told to pay $270 million.

Together, the two companies were ordered to pay $1.1 billion, which would be one of the largest payments in US history as a result of patent disputes. Apple and Broadcom appealed the decision, and the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit finally ruled that although the two companies infringed the California Institute of Technology patents, the damages were unreasonable.

CTOnews.com reported in August that potential settlements were being contemplated by Apple, Broadcom and Caltech, and that the settlement has now taken effect.
