CTOnews.com Oct.12, Bloomberg reported today that Xiaomi has held talks with a number of automakers, including Brilliance and Chery, about potential production partnerships, according to "people familiar with the situation."

Xiaomi is still trying to get approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, discussions with other automakers are still in progress, and "it's not certain" that any partnership can be realized, the person said. Xiaomi declined to comment, while Brilliance and Chery did not respond to requests for comment.

Last year, Bloomberg also reported that Xiaomi was in talks with BAIC to produce electric cars.

CTOnews.com previously reported that Reuters quoted people familiar with the matter in August this year as saying that Xiaomi had obtained approval from the National Development and Reform Commission to produce electric vehicles. The National Development and Reform Commission, which oversees new investment and capacity in China's auto industry, approved Beijing-based Xiaomi earlier this month to produce electric cars, making Xiaomi the fourth company to receive approval from the NDRC since late 2017, people familiar with the matter said.

Xiaomi, however, still needs approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which evaluates technical and safety requirements for new automakers and models.
