Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com October 12 news, Nvidia high-end graphics card RTX 4090 has previously been exposed a fatal defect: 16-pin power interface (12VHPWR) is easy to melt, resulting in video card damage. This situation seems to have eased in recent months, but a user named Byogore recently reported on the PCMR forum that his RTX 4090 was damaged by a melted power interface. However, the user said it took a year for his RTX 4090 to have a problem.

CTOnews.com noted that the RTX 4090 meltdown occurred frequently in early 2023, when many users reported that their RTX 4090 malfunctioned after less than six months of use, which was directly related to the melting of the video card, power cord, power adapter or the 16-pin power interface between the two, while the life of the Byogore graphics card was much longer than that.

Worryingly, the Byogore case may be repeated on all Nvidia RTX 4090 using older 12VHPWR power interfaces. This is not to say that all Nvidia RTX 4090 will have this problem, but there is the possibility of more unpredictable failures in the future.

Since the end of 2022, there have been many reports of melting and damage to the Nvidia RTX 4090 because the graphics card uses a new 12VHPWR power interface that can provide up to 600W of power.

Nvidia responded to these questions in November 2022, when the problem was just beginning to emerge, claiming that the problem was caused by a user error, indicating that the user did not fully plug the 16-pin power connector into the corresponding power connector on the RTX 4090. However, this is not the case.

Half a year after Nvidia released its response, PCI-SIG introduced a new 16-pin interface called the 12V-2x6 power interface, which claims to solve the problem with the 12VHPWR power interface. The new interface has been modified, including an increase in power from 600W to 660W, and a slight redesign seems to solve the interface melting problem. So far, there is really no melting problem with the new interface, and of course only time will tell if it really solves the problem.

Nvidia has been quietly extending this new interface to RTX 4090 and other graphics cards, such as RTX 4070, but there are still many RTX 4090 graphics cards on the market that use older, original 12VHPWR power ports. The good news is that the warranty for most modern graphics cards has been extended to three to four years, and if something goes wrong in the next few years, RTX 4090 should still be under warranty.
