CTOnews.com, Oct. 12, according to a memo seen by Reuters, the US Space Force (The troops. Space Force) has suspended its employees from using web-based artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT because of data security concerns.

The memo, dated September 29, forbids the use of such artificial intelligence tools, including large language models, on government computers for what the space force calls "Guardians" workers, unless they are formally approved by the Force's chief technology and innovation officer.

The temporary ban was imposed "because of the risk of data aggregation", according to the memo.

The application of generative artificial intelligence has grown explosively in the past year. They use a large amount of historical data to learn, and can quickly generate text, image or video content according to a simple prompt.

Lisa Costa, chief technology and innovation officer of the Space Force, said in the memo that the technology "will undoubtedly revolutionize the way we work and enhance the ability of guardians to operate at high speeds."

CTOnews.com noted that an Air Force spokesman confirmed the temporary ban. "the U.S. space force has imposed a strategic ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence and large language models, and we are determining the best way to integrate these capabilities into the role of guardians and space force missions," Air Force spokesman Tanya Downsworth said in a statement. She added: "this is to protect our services and guardians' data."

Costa said in the memo that her office has formed a generative artificial intelligence task force with other offices at the Pentagon to consider using the technology in a "responsible and strategic" manner. She also said that more guidance on the use of generative artificial intelligence by space forces will be issued next month.
