CTOnews.com, October 11 (Xinhua)-- RISC-V International, an organization responsible for overseeing the development of open source RISC-V instruction set architecture, responded to US lawmakers this week, who last week expressed concern about the openness of RISC-V technology and put forward the idea of "shutting down" the instruction set architecture.

Calista Redmond, CEO of RISC-V International, responded that RISC-V must remain open to achieve the development of computing power that is widely used.

"RISC-V will continue to exist," Redmond wrote in a blog post. "as an open standard for computing, its global adoption and influence has grown significantly. RISC-V is an open standard that absorbs meaningful contributions from around the world. As a global standard, RISC-V is not controlled by any single company or country."

Redmond believes that open standards such as Ethernet, HTTPS, JPEG and USB have historically driven technology development, innovation and market expansion. Throughout the development of the technology industry, these standards have been acting as beacons, attracting consumers to use new technologies and encouraging enterprises to explore new areas. Instead of acting as a stage for competition, these platforms provide a unified foundation, centering on unique products and value propositions, and lay the foundation for competition. At the same time, American companies have historically played a key role in the development and promotion of these standards, ensuring consistency in technological processes and setting the tone for global progress.

RISC-V is another open source technology that could become ubiquitous. It brings together global contribution libraries from North America, Europe, and Asia, and remains decentralized. The technology also gets rid of the limited proprietary framework.

To address the concerns of US lawmakers, RISC-V entities have positioned themselves as partners in global standards rather than technology gatekeepers. It emphasizes the essence of its open framework spirit and emphasizes that the field of competition is implementation, not basic standards.

Redmond stressed: "the United States plans to impose unprecedented restrictions on open standards, which will reduce the access of products, solutions and talent to the global market. Differences at the standards level will lead to a world full of incompatible solutions, resulting in duplication of efforts and strangling the entire market."
