According to reports, as the key technologies in the quantum field, quantum codec and modulation and demodulation play an important role in quantum communication, quantum computing and so on. The traditional quantum codec and modulation and demodulation equipment is a large module device which is composed of phase modulator, amplitude modulator, circulator, polarizer, Faraday mirror, parametric conversion crystal and other discrete instruments. Because the precision of the construction has to reach the micron level and depends on pure manual craftsmanship, the device is extremely demanding for builders, and it usually takes full-time professors or doctoral students to build it by hand for a week or two. Manual construction of devices is not only inefficient, but also not consistent, which greatly affects the development of many applications in the quantum industry.
The first domestic quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip successfully developed by Guoguang Quantum has a volume of only 3cm × 4cm × 0.2cm, which is known as "the chip has good consistency, stable performance, easy to use and easy to operate".
The performance of quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip mainly includes several key indicators, such as modulation accuracy, attenuation, modulation bandwidth, polarization isolation, entanglement preparation efficiency and so on. The quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip independently developed by Guoguang Quantum integrates lithium niobate, silicon light, indium gallium arsenic and metal chloride process, which can achieve high precision phase coding and polarization coding. The optical attenuation of the whole chip is within the 3dB, and the polarization isolation is higher than that of 20dB. At the same time, the whole chip also considers the non-decoherence subspace, no matter how the polarization quantum state after coding is changed, it can be corrected at the receiver and demodulated spontaneously. The whole device can achieve polarization independent or arbitrary polarization elimination.
Zhao Yibo, chairman of Guoguang Quantum, said that the quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip will have an important impact on quantum key distribution, quantum computing, quantum enhanced lidar and other sub-areas.
Taking the quantum key distribution device as an example, because the volume of the quantum codec and modulation and demodulation device used is 30cm × 40cm × 4cm, the traditional quantum key distribution device is about as large as a computer server and needs to be mounted on the rack. However, if the quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip are used, the quantum key distribution device can be the size of a mobile phone, which will greatly reduce the volume of quantum communication equipment and greatly reduce the product cost.
In quantum computing, through the precise modulation and demodulation of quantum states, quantum computing can achieve more efficient and secure information processing and transmission. The application principle of quantum enhanced lidar is that the information is edited on the quantum state, and the signal recognition and friend or foe identification are realized by quantum coding and decoding. The application of quantum codec and modulation and demodulation chip will greatly improve the recognition accuracy of lidar.
