CTOnews.com, Oct. 11 (Xinhua)-- California Governor Gavin Newsom (Gavin Newsom) signed SB 244, the maintenance Rights Act (Right to Repair Act), which makes it easier for consumers to repair electronic devices themselves or send them to independent repair shops. Since California is one of the largest economies in the world, the bill, co-sponsored by iFixit, could make it easier for consumers across the United States to repair their electronic devices.

The bill is more stringent than similar programs in New York, Colorado and Minnesota, where manufacturers must provide appropriate tools, parts, software and documentation within seven years of production for devices selling for more than $100 (CTOnews.com Note: current 729 yuan) (devices that sell for less than $100 only take three years).

California Senator Susan Egman (Susan Eggman), who sponsored the bill, said in a statement issued by the California Public interest Research Group (CALPIRG) that she was "very happy" and said, "this is a common sense bill that will help small repair stores, give consumers choices, and protect the environment."

California is home to many electronics manufacturers, the most famous of which is Apple, which finally expressed its support after initially trying to block the bill. From a practical point of view, California's law may benefit consumers in places where there is no similar law. California-based Google, for example, recently confirmed that the Pixel 8 series would be supplied with spare parts for seven years-the same number as under the California Act.

Although the bill covers a wide range of electronic products manufactured and sold after July 1, 2021, there are some exceptions, such as game consoles and alarm systems.
