CTOnews.com, Oct. 10-about 4300 union workers have gone on strike at three General Motors plants in Canada, according to Reuters. GM is grappling with a labor shutdown in the United States, which is entering its fourth week.

The Canadian union Unifor said GM had "stubbornly refused" to honor its contract with Ford, which offered a 25 per cent pay rise in Canada, followed by a strike by workers.

"GM still fails to meet our pension, pension needs and meaningful measures such as turning temporary workers into regular workers," said Lana Payne, president of Unifor National. GM said it would continue negotiations with Unifor.

The strike is a further headache for GM, which loses millions of dollars a week because of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike that began on September 15th.

Deutsche Bank estimates that GM has lost 34176 vehicles since the UAW strike began. GM said last week that it had 442586 cars in stock. GM has laid off 2300 American workers as a result of the UAW strike.

Unifor said there would be strikes at GM's Oshawar assembly plant, St. Catherine's powertrain plant and Woodstock parts distribution center, but members of the CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, would work under a separate agreement.

Unifor represents about 18000 Canadian workers at Ford, General Motors and Chrysler parent company Stellantis.

CTOnews.com noted that GM could now face production disruptions because workers at the St. Catherine plant produce car engines, Chevrolet explorers and Corvette powertrains and engine parts. At the Oshawar plant, workers produce Chevrolet Solod trucks, one of GM's most profitable models.
