Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for lead delivery! CTOnews.com October 10, 2013 The GNOME project is evaluating the removal of support for X.Org sessions and a future transition to Wayland-only desktop support.

It is reported that since Fedora 40 wants to disable X11 session support for GNOME and also wants KDE Plasma 6 Wayland to be available only for Fedora, developers have submitted a set of merge requests to remove X.Org session support based on GNOME repository dynamics.

GNOME repository dynamic developers said that X11 testing will be increasingly reduced, since 2016, GNOME has been using Wayland sessions by default, and "now it is time to completely remove X.Org sessions", it is expected that next year GNOME project will only support Wayland sessions.

CTOnews.com also found that in May of this year, Hector Martin, lead developer of Asahi Linux, encouraged users of Asahi Linux distribution to stop using X.Org, saying:

X.Org is almost unmaintained and completely unsuitable for modern display hardware, with large Linux distributions and major desktop environments dropping X.org support.

Previously the only reason Asahi Linux used Xorg by default was because Wayland compositor was slower in terms of software rendering, but now Asahi Linux has GPU drivers that will soon switch all default Xorg-KDE users to Wayland by default in an update.
