CTOnews.com, October 10 (Xinhua)-- NASA's Parker Solar probe (Parker Solar Probe) has set a new speed record during its flight around the sun, making it the fastest object ever built. On September 27, the probe crossed the solar system at a speed of 635266 kilometers per hour, breaking its own record of 586863.4 kilometers per hour set three years ago.

If a plane can fly at this speed, it can circle the earth about 15 times in an hour, or fly from New York to Los Angeles in 20 seconds.

CTOnews.com noted that the Parker solar probe set not only a new speed record, but also a new distance from the sun, which is only 7.26 million kilometers from the sun's surface. Considering that the sun is about 1.4 million kilometers in diameter, this is equivalent to standing by a burning bonfire close enough to smell smoke without scorching nose hairs.

After 24 orbits around the sun, the Parker solar probe will eventually fall into the interior of the sun, but before that, it will gather a lot of information that will help us better simulate the behavior of the sun.

At present, the Parker solar probe still has seven orbits to complete, and these records are expected to be broken again.
