CTOnews.com, October 10 (Xinhua)-- according to CNBC, the world's largest offshore wind farm project took an important step in generating electricity for the first time over the weekend.

The wind farm project, called Dogger Bank, located in the North Sea in the north-east of the UK, will be developed in three stages (A, B and C) and will have a total installed capacity of 3.6 gigawatts when completed. There is also a proposed fourth phase of the project, called Dogger Bank D.

"the first wind turbine in the Dogger Bank A phase of the project started running and generating electricity at 08:37 on Saturday (October 7)," the Dogger Bank wind farm project said in an announcement on Monday. "electricity from the first offshore wind turbine is now transmitted to the UK's national grid through Dogger Bank's high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, marking the first time that British wind farms have used HVDC technology."

The project is so large that it will be able to provide electricity to up to 6 million households a year. Dogger Bank uses GE Vernova's giant Haliade-X wind turbine, whose blades are 107m long.

Dogger Bank is a joint venture project jointly invested by SSE Renewables, Equinor and V å rgr ø nn, each holding 40%, 40% and 20% of the shares.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, chief executive of SSE, said in a statement that Dogger Bank would "provide a significant boost to Britain's energy security, affordability and leadership in dealing with climate change, which is how we should respond to the energy crisis."

Equinor, a Norwegian company known for producing oil and gas, is also involved in wind energy projects such as Dogger Bank and Hywind Tampen.

Britain has a mature offshore wind energy industry, with characteristics such as good wind speed, long coastline and "relatively shallow" seabed.

Major offshore wind farms in British waters include Hornsea 2, a fully operational facility with 165 wind turbines and an installed capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts, which Danish energy company Orsted has called "the largest installed wind farm in the world".

Although people involved in the Dogger Bank project have repeatedly called it "the world's largest offshore wind farm", Monday's announcement also called it "the world's largest offshore wind farm under construction", suggesting that a lot of work needs to be done before it can be completed.
