CTOnews.com Honda today unveiled its first electric mower prototype that supports autonomous driving.

The prototype is known as the Honda Automatic Working Mower (AWM), and Honda says it successfully conducted proof-of-concept testing of the AWM earlier this year at a commercial landscape company in the United States. Next year the company will launch a pilot project to test AWM in the field.

AWM can be driven manually or operated in automatic mode. The operator sets up automatic operation by using a "teach" mode in which the mower uses a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) to create a mowing route map. AWM can learn multiple mowing routes and patterns and save them to the Cloud Virtual Machine.

Once the route has been saved, the operator can activate the AWM's automatic mode of operation in "replay" mode. After placing the AWM in the home position, the operator downloads the specified mowing route map using a tablet or smartphone. AWM will then start to run automatically and mow according to the map route.

Honda says its AWM can stay straight on hills and rough terrain, dual-motor traction control prevents tire skidding, and is equipped with four radars and four lidar sensors for obstacle detection.

AWM automatically reduces blade speed at low speeds and loads to reduce power consumption. At high loads, AWM automatically reduces speed to prevent grass jams and incomplete mowing.

CTOnews.com notes that AWM is also a zero-turn mower, which is a mower that can turn in place with a zero turning radius and therefore mows more flexibly, especially on lawns with obstacles or winding edges.
