CTOnews.com, October 10, after IDC released its global PC shipments report for the third quarter of 2023, another market research agency, Gartner, also released its PC shipments report for that quarter, believing that the PC market is expected to recover in the fourth quarter of 2023 after eight consecutive quarters of declines.

Global PC shipments totaled 64.3 million units in the third quarter of 2023, down 9 per cent from the same period last year, Gartner reported.

Mikako Kitakawa, chief analyst at Gartner, translated by CTOnews.com, commented as follows: "there is evidence that the decline in the PC market has finally bottomed out. While corporate PC demand remains weak, seasonal demand in the education market boosted shipments in the third quarter, offsetting some of the decline. Suppliers have also made continued progress in reducing PC inventory, which is expected to return to normal by the end of 2023 as long as holiday sales do not collapse."

Although Lenovo's shipments fell again from a year earlier, the decline has slowed to single digits.

At the same time, Hewlett-Packard is the only supplier to achieve year-on-year growth, with shipments increasing in all regions.

Dell reported that its shipments fell for the sixth consecutive quarter because of its strong position in the market and weak demand for corporate PCs.

Apple's shipments fell sharply from the same period last year, in part because of a sharp increase in shipments in the third quarter of 2022 after an easing of supply disruptions caused by the Chinese blockade in early 2022. Shipments followed a seasonal trend in the third quarter of 2023, driven mainly by demand from students and educators.

Gartner expects the global PC market to grow by 4.9% in 2024, with growth in both the business and consumer sectors.
