Foreign media say Apple and Mihayou seem to be getting closer this year than ever before.

When Apple CEO Tim Cook stopped at the Shanghai office of Mihayou when he visited China in March, Cook met with the "team" behind the original god and exchanged greetings with the founder of Mihayou.

After that, at Apple's annual launch, Apple showed off two Miha games to showcase the performance of the new iPhone 15 series in terms of game performance.

Behind the scenes, however, the two companies have been at odds. Since August, Mihayou has tried twice to bypass the 30 per cent "apple tax" (CTOnews.com note: Apple charges up to 30 per cent commission on each transaction within the App Store).

A key element of Miha Tour's many games is a mechanism called gacha, which encourages players to draw cards to get playable characters and limited items. Although this mechanism is controversial, it is also because of this card-drawing mechanism that makes the original God one of the most lucrative mobile platform games in the world.

By eliminating the "apple tax", foreign media said that Miha Youyou is expected to get more significant growth in income.

Before Miha Tour, game companies such as NetEase and Perfect World tried to direct players to Wechat and Alipay, two payment apps with much lower cut than Apple.

It is reported that Mihayou's recent attempt to bypass Apple rules began in August this year through its official community forum app "Miyou Society", in which players of Mihayou's "original God" and "collapse: star Dome Railway" can get exclusive promotions and game-related information.

Foreign media claimed that Mihayou's move was "low-key and cautious":

Mihayou is said to have not publicly launched and promoted new payment channels, but instructed customer service staff to guide users to make in-game purchases through Mihayou's website, where they can buy digital goods directly, while Apple will not take a cut of the sales.

However, "Rice Travel Club" was quickly removed from the shelves by Apple App Store on August 22. Four days later, the app reappeared on the market, but web-based payment options were no longer recommended, sparking speculation that "Miha Youyou was caught by Apple".

Then, on August 30, Mihayou launched a new Mini Program on Alipay. Like the previous "Miyou Club", this new payment method did not cause much sensation when it was launched, except for short posts on social media platform Weibo. However, Apple asked Miha to disable this feature on Sept. 11.

When Apple introduced App Store as the only gateway between apps and its devices more than a decade ago, claiming that a 30 per cent commission would help cover the costs of hosting applications and ensure that they met certain standards, there were few objections.

Although Steve Jobs, then CEO, said Apple did not "intend to make money out of it", the commission proved to be the main driver of the company's growth, which contributed $1.1 trillion (CTOnews.com note: about 8.04 trillion yuan) to developer bills and sales in 2022.

However, Apple has also suffered a lot of lawsuits because of the rules of App Store.

In August 2020, Epic Games, which produced the hugely popular game Fortnite, clashed with Apple. As expected, Apple removed the game from App Store, saying it violated the rules. The dispute escalated, leading to a chaotic lawsuit and a high-profile publicity campaign launched by Epic with the hashtag # FreeFortnite.

Mihayou has not yet upgraded its action to challenge the "Apple tax", but foreign media said: "Apple is expected to face further challenges in the Chinese market."
