On the evening of October 9, Beijing time, Google's cloud division Google Cloud today released a new artificial intelligence (AI)-supported search function that can help health care workers quickly extract accurate clinical information from different types of medical records.

The Pexels healthcare industry has a lot of valuable information and data, but it is difficult for clinicians to find them because they are usually stored in a variety of systems and formats. The new search tool released by Google Cloud today will allow doctors to extract information from clinical records, scanned documents and electronic health records, so that they can access that information in one place.

Google says the new features will eventually save health care workers a lot of time and energy. Lisa O'Malley, senior director of product management for Google Cloud artificial Intelligence, said in an interview with the media: "the new tool can relieve the frustration of clinicians. In addition to saving time, the new tool also ensures that they can find the answer more easily."

For example, if doctors want to know a patient's medical history, they no longer need to read their notes, faxes and electronic health records separately. Instead, they can search for things such as "what drugs has this patient taken in the past 12 months?" And check the relevant information in one place.

O'Malley also said Google's new search function could also be used in other key applications, such as applying the correct billing code and determining whether patients meet the criteria for registering clinical trials.

Moreover, the new features can also reference and link to the original sources of information, which will come directly from the organization's own internal data. This helps allay clinicians' concerns that artificial intelligence may produce hallucinations or inaccurate information.

The search function is particularly valuable for health care workers, who are already burdened with manpower shortages and a staggering amount of paperwork.

A 2016 study funded by the American Medical Association (AMA) found that for every hour doctors spend on patients, they spend an extra two hours on administrative work. Doctors also tend to spend an extra hour or two doing paperwork outside their working hours, which is usually their sleep time, the study said.

According to a January survey by medical professional search platform Medscape, 53 per cent of doctors reported that they felt exhausted in 2022, up from 42 per cent in 2018.

With the new search function, Google hopes to reduce the time clinicians spend mining additional records and databases.

The new feature, called Vertex AI Search, builds on Google's existing medical API and medical data engine products and will be made available to health and life sciences organizations through Google's Vertex AI search platform. Companies in other industries can already use the platform to search public websites, documents and other databases.

Starting today, customers can register for early access to Vertex AI Search for the healthcare and life sciences industries. Before that, Google Cloud was already testing the feature with health organizations such as the Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic), Hackensack Meridian Health and Highmark Health.
