Omdia said that according to Apple's 2023 purchase forecast, this will be the lowest annual panel shipments since 2020. Similar shipping levels were seen in 2018 and 2019. Demand for 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models is expected to fall sharply in 2023 compared with previous years, as it is harder to sell high-priced and high-end products during the global recession.

The supply of 12.9in iPad Pro panels is likely to fall by more than 60 per cent year-on-year, affecting both Sharp and LG Display. Sharp's 11-inch iPad Pro panel supply may also be down 70% from a year earlier, resulting in a 36% year-on-year decline in Apple's 2023 iPad panel shipments.

Citing its tablet and laptop display and OEM market tracker database for the second quarter of 2023, Omdia said Apple's tablet panel shipments fell 28% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, the lowest level since the second quarter of 2020. This reflects poor tablet sales in 2023 and the market is shrinking back to where it was three years ago.

In the second quarter of 2023, although shipments hit a record low in the first quarter of 2023, panel purchases for 10.9-inch iPad Air and iPad models increased by 122% year-on-year. LG Display is the only panel supplier.

On the other hand, the 10.9-inch iPad also increased by 14% year-on-year from BOE and LG Display in the second quarter of 2023.

Omdia said Apple's iPad Air and iPad models are better able to withstand the market recession than iPad Pro models in 2023 because of the high price and performance advantages of mid-range products during a downturn in demand.

Apple's total shipments of 11-inch iPad Pro fell 80% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, with the biggest quarterly decline of all iPad models.

Supply of Sharp, an 11-inch panel supplier, fell temporarily in the second quarter of 2023. However, Sharp's 11-inch supply has been delayed from the second quarter of 2023 to the third quarter of 2023.

Based on this, Omdia predicts that demand for Sharp's 11-inch panels will increase again in the second half of 2023. LG Display, another 11-inch panel supplier, cut its supply by 50 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Looking ahead to tablet panel demand in the second half of 2023, Apple is likely to slightly increase its total iPad panel purchases in the third quarter of 2023 in preparation for the traditional peak sales season at the end of the year, with a growth rate expected to be 8 per cent. Shipments of each iPad model are expected to increase slightly compared with the first half of the year, except for 10.2-inch panels.

CTOnews.com notes that with the launch of the next-generation 10.9in iPad, Omdia believes that market demand may gradually shift from 10.2in iPad to 10.9in iPad.

However, at a time when "there is no sign of a recovery in demand from the market", Apple conservatively put forward a panel purchase plan for the fourth quarter of 2023. At present, inventory control is a top priority for all manufacturers.

Sharp dominated iPad Pro models in the years leading up to 2021, with a share of more than 30 per cent, while BOE's share of iPad panel supply rose from less than 30 per cent in 2021 to 42 per cent in 2022, ranking first among iPad panel suppliers for the first time.

According to the 2023 forecast, Apple's share of iPad panel supply is estimated at 46 per cent of BOE and 41 per cent of LG Display. The supply share of iPad and iPad Air panels for BOE and LG Display is increasing. Sharp, by contrast, has been severely affected, with a supply share of just 13 per cent in 2023. This huge decline is due to weak demand for iPad Pro.

According to the current survey, Apple plans to purchase a total of 10 million OLED iPad panels in 2024.

Forecasts show that LG Display may supply 6 million screens for 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, while Samsung Display may supply 4 million screens for 11-inch models. The OLED iPad will be added to the iPad Pro product line as the first OLED model of Apple's IT products. Starting from 2024, the 12.9in iPad Pro with Mini LED backlight will gradually be replaced by OLED technology.

In addition, Apple is continuing to discuss the widespread adoption of OLED technology for the iPad mini and iPad Air series from 2026 as the next phase of its strategy. Apple may adjust its release plans for OLED iPad mini and iPad Air based on market feedback and OLED iPad Pro sales results. From 2024, Apple will pay more attention to OLED display panels and seek more display supply chain partners to add to its list of OLED iPad panel suppliers.
