CTOnews.com, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) according to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean president's office announced on Monday that the U.S. government has decided to indefinitely extend the exemption period for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's factories in China to import US chip equipment.

In other words, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are free to supply semiconductor equipment containing American technology to Chinese factories without separate approval.

The Yonhap news agency said the Commerce Department was updating its list of "validated end users" to determine which entities had access to exports of specific technologies. Once on the list, there is no need to obtain separate export licenses, which means that US export control policy is effectively suspended indefinitely.

"We welcome the US government's decision to extend the exemption from export controls. We believe this decision will help stabilize the global semiconductor supply chain," SK Hynix said in a statement.

The CTOnews.com inquiry found that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix received an one-year authorization from the US Department of Commerce last year to supply equipment for chip production to factories in China within a year without applying for an additional license, which expired in October this year.

Currently, Samsung Electronics produces NAND flash memory in Xi'an, China, SK Hynix produces DRAM chips in Wuxi factory and NAND flash memory in Dalian. CTOnews.com notes that TrendForce statistics show that by the end of June, the two companies together controlled nearly 70 per cent of the global DRAM and 50 per cent of the global NAND flash market.
