CTOnews.com, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) recently, some hackers have stolen the names, photos, birth details and race of millions of users of US genetic testing giant 23andMe and sold them on the dark Internet for thousands of dollars.

A spokesman for 23andMe said the data appeared to have been collected through previously leaked user credentials, while 23andMe's security system had not been compromised.

The company only became aware of the attack after reading a post on Reddit that appeared to have been deleted by the platform, and hackers later began peddling the data on BreachForums, the cybercrime market.

Earlier this week, an anonymous seller peddled the data on BreachForums, saying it contained "DNA profiles of millions of people, including the world's top business giants", noting that each group of data was accompanied by "corresponding email addresses". According to Wired magazine, the sample data are said to contain data from tech bigwigs such as Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin and Elon Musk, but it is not clear whether the figures are true.

CTOnews.com noted that Anne Wojcicki, sister of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and ex-wife of Sergey Brin, was at the helm of 23andMe. The company has a total of 14 million users, but has yet to confirm the number of affected user accounts and points out that the original genetic data has not been stolen.

Founded in 2006, 23andMe is known for its saliva test, which measures genetic predisposition, ancestry and genetic traits. The company shares anonymous user data with third parties with the consent of users and encourages users to enable multi-factor authentication to prevent further attacks.
