It is worth mentioning that the new mineral niobium Baotou ore has been formally approved by the Committee on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA CNMNC), and the approval number is IMA 2022-127a.

Niobium (Niobium), chemical symbol Nb, atomic number 41, is a transition metal element. Niobium element is a kind of glossy gray metal. The ductility of high purity niobium metal is high, but it will harden with the increase of impurity content. Niobium has a very low capture cross section for thermal neutrons, so it is quite useful in the nuclear industry.

Niobium Baotou ore is a kind of silicate mineral rich in Ba, Nb, Ti, Fe and Cl. Its ideal formula is Ba4 (Ti2.5Fe2+1.5) Nb4Si4O28Cl, which belongs to tetragonal system and space group I41a (# 88).

According to CNNC, the niobium Baotou ore is found in the Bayan Obo deposit in the world-famous Baotou City, Inner Mongolia, and occurs in niobium-rare earth-iron ore. It is brown to black, columnar or plate-shaped, semi-autogenous to heteromorphic, and the particle size is about 20 ~ 80 μ m.

Public data show that the Bayan Obo deposit in China is quite rich in mineral types. So far, more than 150 kinds of minerals have been found, of which 16 are new minerals. Niobium Baotou ore is the 17th new mineral found in the deposit and is a Nb-rich analogue found in Baotou ore in the 1960s.

CNNC pointed out that through this study, the problem of electricity price balance of Baotou Mine, which has been debated for a long time in the international mineralogical circle, has been solved, and it has also laid a theoretical foundation for the study of niobium Baotou Mine. The Nb-rich Baotou niobium deposit not only increases the types of niobium ore minerals in the deposit, but also provides a new research perspective for the enrichment and mineralization mechanism of niobium, and provides a new direction for the development of strategic key metals such as niobium.
