The improvement of red light brightness is the most difficult challenge for the MicroLED industry. JBD said that it decided the direction of hybrid integrated semiconductor technology at the beginning of its establishment, and adhered to the route of AlGaInP red light technology. AlGaInP is the key to achieve high-performance red light, with the best matching red band gap, is the most mature semiconductor material used to make red LED in the industry.

The change of MicroLED brightness with driving current the new generation of ultra-thin AlGaInP epitaxy technology and the matching chip passivation technology are the key to improve the brightness of red MicroLED. It is reported that the pixel size of JBD red light is 4um, while the size of luminous LED is less than 2um, which also puts forward more stringent requirements for luminous efficiency. The progress of AlGaInP epitaxy technology greatly weakens the influence of non-radiative recombination on the surface of MicroLED, and slows down the trend of sharp decline of light efficiency of red MicroLED under < 5um size. Combined with chip passivation technology, the bottleneck of red size effect is further broken, and the internal quantum efficiency is greatly improved.

JBD has also made a major breakthrough in pixel optical technology. The new generation of pixel optical structure not only optimizes the antireflective film system to improve the optical extraction efficiency, but also further optimizes the microlens structure, which significantly improves the beam collimation efficiency of small angle and improves the brightness level. As a result, JBD has implemented a product-grade million-nit red panel, which is important to achieve under normal power consumption, that is, the IC driver achieves rated power consumption, not overdrive mode.

Compared with the beam divergence angle of a single pixel in 2021, the red light brightness reached 300,000 nits for the first time, exceeded 500,000 nits in 2022, rose again to 750,000 nits in February 2023, and paved the way for the mass production of the "hummingbird" full-color light engine; in September 2023, it officially broke through the 1 million nits mark.

As mentioned earlier, the progress of red light technology has brought the application potential of JBD "hummingbird" X-cube color light engine to a new height. "hummingbird" color light engine has the characteristics of ultra-small size of 0.4cc, only 1g weight, ultra-low power consumption of 200mW, etc., which has an absolute lead in the consumer-level AR full-color display scheme. Prior to this, JBD has achieved MicroLED blue light 1 million nits, green light 5 million nits brightness. With the red light achieving 1 million nits, the output brightness of the hummingbird color light engine has also increased from 3-4lm to more than 5lm, achieving the lumen efficiency of 12.5lm / cc at ultra-high unit volume.

JBD said that it will fully promote the development of consumer-grade AR glasses based on the mass-produced "hummingbird" full-color light engine scheme. A number of new products based on this scheme will be launched soon, and more information will be disclosed at that time.

To really realize AR glasses like ordinary glasses, the key is to make the micro display screen small enough to fit into the glasses legs, and project a bright, clear and full-color picture on the lens. The maturity of MicroLED micro-display technology makes it possible to shorten the distance between people and meta-universe, and make it further from commercialization.

According to the data, JBD was founded in 2015, headquartered in Pudong, Shanghai, has been focused on the R & D and production of less than 0.5 inch MicroLED, with independent IC design, MOCVD material growth, MicroLED hybrid integrated technology processing and manufacturing, packaging and testing, software and hardware driver design, optical module and other technologies. At present, hundreds of related patents have been laid out in the field of MicroLED micro-display, mainly for close-eye display AR, car head-up display HUD, micro projector, 3D printing, motion optics, square display and other applications to provide products and solutions. Customers have partnered with a number of consumer electronics giants around the world, such as the exploration version of Xiaomi's smart glasses exposed in 2021 using JBD's Micro LED solution. In terms of products, since MicroLED was put into research and development in 2015, JBD released its first prototype product in 2018, the first generation of monochromatic standard products in 2021, and color optical machines in 2022 and 2023.
