Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) Google's new flagship phone, the Pixel 8 Pro, has an infrared temperature sensor that can measure the temperature of objects. However, Google did not say much about this feature, nor did it explain why it was added to the phone.
CTOnews.com noted that at the launch of the Pixel 8 Pro, Google simply mentioned this feature: "on the back of the Pixel 8 Pro, there is a new temperature sensor that allows you to quickly scan an object and get its temperature. You can use it to check whether your pot is hot enough to start cooking, or whether your baby's bottle is at the right temperature. We have also submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enable Pixel's thermometer application so that you can take your temperature and save it to Fitbit. "
Any ordinary infrared thermometer can measure the temperature of a hot pot or a milk bottle. However, if you want to point it at a person and take his body temperature, then this is medical data, and the device becomes a second-class medical device, which requires the permission of FDA. Without this license, Pixel cannot ask the Google 8 Pro to tell users what their body temperature is, even if it is fully capable of doing so.
It is important to note that Google does not need to apply for permission for the phone itself or the temperature sensor itself. Technically, Google doesn't even need to apply for permission to read the user's skin temperature, as long as it doesn't use the data to tell the user what the body temperature is. Companies already use infrared temperature sensors built into smartwatches to track sleep and predict cycles, but they are very careful not to display this information as body temperature.
Of course, users can also get a temperature number by pointing their phone at their forehead, but it's not the body temperature, it's just the temperature on the surface of the forehead, the two are not the same thing.
FDA has several ways to license second-tier devices, and Google did not say which one it chose or when it submitted its application.
