On September 27, Digital China unveiled KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China 2023. At the prestigious Cloud Native and Open Source Ceremony, Xiang Yangchao, Technical Director of Digital China Xinchuang Business Group, discussed the latest progress of open source and cloud native technologies with the world's top technical experts, and shared the latest research and practice progress of Digital China in the field of cloud native infrastructure innovation.

Cloud Native Infrastructure Trends and Challenges

With the digital transformation gradually stepping into the "deep water area," the digital transformation path is changing from single to multi-path and full-path. The elastic and agile digital transformation requires cloud-native application micro-service, which leads to more elastic demand for IT resources, and the new generation of digital technology infrastructure represented by cloud-native or application engine faces challenges.

In the view of Digital China, cloud native infrastructure is facing three levels of problems: first, CPU performance growth is slow, due to Moore's law deceleration superimposed Denard's law failure, so that chip process improvement to chip performance, energy saving benefits continue to decrease; Second, bandwidth traffic growth is rapid, data explosion growth, network bandwidth synchronous acceleration growth, but a single CPU that has reached the limit cannot meet the demand for data and bandwidth growth; The third is the IaaS tax/ PaaS tax. Further improvement of computing power is hindered by the computing power consumption and delay caused by the increasingly heavy infrastructure IaaS and PaaS in the data center.

In particular, with the explosive growth of applications represented by ChatGPT, large models also put forward new requirements for the adjustment and deployment of computing power. Based on this, Digital China believes that cloud native infrastructure is shifting from compute (CPU) centric to data (DPU) centric, with servers focusing on business computing and all IaaS Infra tasks handled by IPU / DPU. However, because the DPU architecture itself is still evolving, it is difficult to combine high performance and flexibility. In order to solve the related problems, Digital China proposed a cloud native service grid acceleration engine solution based on DPU.

Cloud Native Service Grid Acceleration Engine Solution Based on DPU

In recent years, concerns about performance have become a significant issue in promoting service grids. The service grid provides a strong guarantee and rich functional features for the deployment and application of Kubernets microservices, but it also introduces a computational burden, especially in the case of complex business, which will cause a large CPU consumption.

Through analysis, Digital China found that in large-scale business scenarios, some specific programs are key parts that cause performance losses. In order to optimize these problems, Digital China tries to solve the CPU occupation problem through DPU. Digital China believes that, different from traditional computing power, after computing power reorganization, the computing power of business logic, AI and distributed platform can be unloaded from CPU to different platforms, which can reduce the platform tax consumption of CPU resources, and at the same time, it can provide flexible scheduling and distribution of computing power. By fully integrating various computing resources, agile development and agile deployment of application microservices can be realized.

On this basis, the cloud pivot system launched by Digital China_software and heterogeneous hardware system accelerated for cloud native deployment can give full play to the proprietary capabilities of heterogeneous hardware through software and hardware collaborative design, and unload and accelerate the cloud native service grid, so as to reconstruct the data center infrastructure and realize the support for the horizontally scalable high-performance cloud native computing power demand. This is also the industry's first cloud-native service grid acceleration system. Deployed between data center servers and switches, the cloud pivot system can greatly reduce the computing power consumption and latency caused by IaaS and PaaS, and improve the overall computing power of the data center.

Building a Zero-Trust DPU Container Network

In a cloud-native environment, since all microservices remain in the same flat network, this also leads to significant security risks. In general, zero trust based on services is considered to be the primary solution to this problem. The so-called zero trust, that is, no direct authorization to trust any user, device, service, based on identity authentication and authorization to rebuild the trust basis of access control, so as to ensure identity trust, device trust, application trust and link trust. However, current technology solutions either consume a lot of CPU computation or fail to achieve service visibility, resulting in a natural challenge for a DPU based zero-trust cloud native service grid architecture.

Through in-depth research and understanding of technology, Digital China has realized a zero-trust container network with zero injection and service awareness, further reducing the application cost of DPU. Finally, Digital China innovatively through software and hardware co-design, giving full play to the respective proprietary capabilities of heterogeneous hardware, offloading and accelerating the cloud-native service grid, and then reconstructing the data center infrastructure. At the same time, Digital China has designed a combinable architecture of hardware resource pooling, which can be compatible with the use of users 'original old equipment and greatly save users' investment.

Facing the challenges and opportunities brought by cloud nativity, Digital China believes that a new digital technology stack is taking shape. Centering on the architecture of "digital cloud integration," Digital China will continue to deepen the innovation field of cloud native infrastructure, focus on the scientific and technological revolution and industrial revolution led by cloud native as the core, and continuously contribute to the construction and development of cloud native and open source ecology.
