CTOnews.com, October 7 (Xinhua)-- BBC, the UK's largest news agency, has released its principles for evaluating the use of biological artificial intelligence (Gen AI), including research and production for news, archives and "personalized experiences".

Rodrigo Davis, director of national affairs at BBC, said in a blog post that the broadcaster believes that artificial intelligence technology provides an opportunity to "bring more value to our audience and society."

He proposed three guiding principles, that is, BBC will always be in the best interests of the public, give priority to talent and creativity by respecting the rights of artists, and remain open and transparent to the content generated by AI.

BBC said it would work with technology companies, other media organizations and regulators to safely develop generative artificial intelligence and focus on maintaining trust in the news industry.

However, while BBC determines how best to use generative artificial intelligence, it also prevents web crawlers such as OpenAI and Common Crawl from accessing BBC sites. The broadcaster joins CNN, the New York Times, Reuters and other news organizations to prevent web crawlers from accessing their copyrighted content. Davis said the move was to "safeguard the interests of license fee payers" and that it was not in the public interest to train the AI model with BBC data without BBC permission.

CTOnews.com notes that other news organizations have also expressed their views on the technology. The Associated Press released its own guidelines earlier this year, and it also worked with OpenAI to share its content to train the GPT model.
