OpenAI has discussed options to address its shortage of AI chips since at least last year, according to people familiar with the matter. These options include self-development of AI chips, closer cooperation with Nvidia and other chip manufacturers, diversification of suppliers, and many other aspects.

However, according to a recent "internal discussion" by Reuters, OpenAI has not yet decided to continue to move forward. Meanwhile, OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.

Before that, Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, publicly complained in the first half of the year that he was "desperately short" of GPU, which he relied heavily on. At the same time, it also leads to the reliability and speed of its API being criticized by OpenAI customers. According to Altman, OpenAI faces many problems, such as the shortage of advanced processors and the high cost of hardware operation.

According to Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon analysis, at 4 cents per query, if the search volume of ChatGPT reaches Google's 1Accord 10, OpenAI initially needs about $48.1 billion worth of GPU (CTOnews.com Note: current about 351.611 billion yuan) and about $16 billion worth of chips per year (currently about 116.96 billion yuan) to keep running.

Industry senior analysis, OpenAI self-research chip will be a "major strategic move", its annual cost will be as high as hundreds of millions of dollars. But even so, success is not entirely guaranteed.
