CTOnews.com, Oct. 6, according to the Financial Times, TSMC employs 4500 people after the planned commissioning of its Arizona plant in the United States, and has so far employed 2200 people. However, local employees currently account for about 50%, and nearly half are expatriates from Taiwan, according to two people familiar with the matter.

One of the important reasons for the low proportion of local personnel is that TSMC's US factory mainly employs engineering graduates as technicians in the hope that they will take the initiative to maximize production. But American engineering graduates tend to have more and better choices and are attracted by more exciting opportunities elsewhere.

Dylan Patel, chief analyst at SemiAnalysis, the US consultancy, said: "the more skilled the fab workers are, the more power they can get, but they can't do that in the US."

It is a very good choice for employees in Taiwan to join TSMC as technicians after completing four years of engineering school. But American engineering graduates "have higher-paying and more inspiring job opportunities than working in a fab, such as developing new lenses for Apple or working for Meta.
