CTOnews.com, Oct. 4, Nintendo announced that online games and other online communication features of 3DS and Wii U will be terminated from early April 2024, which will affect first-party games and third-party software (with some exceptions).

The news of the shutdown follows the restoration of online functions in Wii U versions of Mario Racing 8 and Sprattern, which disappeared between March and August, when Nintendo was dealing with "online gaming related vulnerabilities".

Since its launch in 2012, the Wii U has sold about 13 million units, making it one of the worst-performing console in Nintendo's history, discontinuing production in 2017.

The 3DS was launched in 2010 and eventually sold more than 75 million units, and even after the launch of the Switch, its sales remained strong until it stopped production in 2020.

Will StreetPass and SpotPass no longer be available after the online service is over?

StreetPass uses local communication between Nintendo's 3DS series of systems, which means it is still available even after the online service is over. However, because SpotPass uses online communication, the SpotPass feature will no longer be available.

For example, you will be able to use StreetPass in the StreetPass Mii Plaza pre-installed on Nintendo 3DS series systems, but you will no longer be able to use online communication features (such as receiving new panels in Puzzle Swap).
