CTOnews.com, Oct. 3, according to CNBC, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott was interviewed on Code Conference last week and revealed that the company had easily acquired Nvidia's popular HPC GPU hardware.

Microsoft is investing heavily in companies such as internal AI projects and external OpenAI, but Scott has previously described his experience in this area as "a bad job" that lasted five years of pain.

Mr Scott said the supply of AI GPU had improved since the spring, allowing him to "rule that these very difficult conflict jobs are no longer so scary".

According to industry reports, Microsoft is secretly working with an unnamed partner to develop proprietary AI chips-CNBC pointed out that Arm is a possible candidate.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Scott acknowledges that something is being prepared, but it will not be ready immediately: "I won't confirm anything, but what I want to say is that we have made a considerable investment in chips over the years... all we have to do is make sure we make the best choice for how to build these and use any options we have available. The best option available in the past few years is Nvidia."

In addition, Scott says its department has been watching the development of AMD: "they are making more and more eye-catching GPU products, which I think will become more and more important to the market in the next few years."

Scott declined to comment on how easy it would be to integrate AMD accelerator cards into the current Microsoft infrastructure, but eventually reserved the possibility with a quip: "Competition is of course a very good thing." AMD's shares rose nearly 5 per cent on Thursday after the news.
