Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, October 3 (Xinhua)-- Hyundai Motor will recall more than 1.6 million vehicles in the United States, according to a recall notice issued by the US Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA). Hyundai has had 21 car fires and 22 overheating accidents in the United States since 2017.

Hyundai recalled 1642551 vehicles in the US on September 22, with an estimated percentage of defects of 1 per cent, according to the recall notice.

In the summer of 2019, Hyundai learned that there was an overheating problem with the ABS module in the Elantra and Jsquire models in the United States, and obtained the module for inspection, but both were so damaged that the cause of the problem could not be determined.

Hyundai North American Safety Operations has filed three cases and learned of the fourth case involving Elantra in December 2020 and filed a case to investigate the issue. The module of the car was also sent for inspection.

In February 2021, Hyundai discovered the cause of the problem for the first time and found evidence of brake fluid leakage in the device.

With a steady stream of reports of car failures throughout 2021, Hyundai hired a third-party engineering company called Exponent to see if the root cause could be identified.

By December 2021, Exponent told Hyundai that the overheating problem could be caused by internal leakage of brake fluid in the hydraulic circuit of the ABS module. The research on the fault module continues, and the culprit was identified in May 2022-there is brake fluid on both sides of the O-ring on the ABS motor shaft.

The investigation lasted from 2022 to 2023, when Hyundai found foreign body pollutants in the brake fluid left in the module. Then, this summer, the company finally determined the ultimate reason:

Exponent found that the O-ring used in the ABS module consists of different rubber material formulations determined by thermogravimetric ("TGA") analysis. In an update provided on September 6, 2023, Exponent confirmed that some material formulations used in O-ring rubber may age and lose hardness over time. In addition, the material may be affected by foreign contaminants in the brake fluid, which may affect the sealing performance.

Hyundai says owners of the affected cars can continue to drive them, but they should park their vehicles outside and away from the building until the problem is resolved. The remedy is to use a new ABS module fuse to provide a smaller working current for the module. Hyundai also said that "in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 24, 2022, the owner of the affected vehicle will be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain conditional remedial measures for recall".
