CTOnews.com Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said today that he believes the search engine deal between Apple and Google makes it impossible for other search engines such as Bing to compete with Google.

Nadella explained in testimony during Google's antitrust trial against the U.S. Department of Justice that as Google became Safari's default search engine on all Apple devices, people got used to it.

"You get up in the morning, brush your teeth, and search on Google," Nadella said. "As habits develop, the only way to change them is to change the default settings. Nadella went on to say that Google was able to use its roughly 90 percent market share to improve search results, further entrenching its monopoly position. He said there are options on the search engine market that are "fake."

Microsoft has been trying to grab Google's market share by adding OpenAI chatbot technology to Bing, but Nadella said it's unclear to what extent AI can reshape existing markets because Google's distribution advantage won't disappear. "I'm very worried about it," he said. "While I'm passionate about a new breakthrough in AI, this vicious cycle that we're stuck in could also intensify. "

Last week, iTunes CEO Eddy Cue testified at the trial and explained that Apple chose Google as the default search engine on its devices because the company "always thought it was the best." Google does pay Apple billions of dollars a year to remain the default search engine, and Eddy Cue claims there is no effective alternative.

CTOnews.com previously quoted Bloomberg as saying that Microsoft approached Apple as early as 2020 and offered Bing as a potential acquisition target, but negotiations between Microsoft executives and Eddy Cue have not progressed.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple is considering creating its own search engine. Such a solution would provide better privacy and deeper integration with Siri and Spotlight, and Apple has developed search tools for apps like the App Store and Apple TV.

Mark Gurman says Apple AI chief John Giannandrea heads up a search team inside Apple that has created the next generation of search engines for Apple apps. The search technology, code-named Pegasus, provides more accurate results.
