Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com news on October 2, in an interview with geeknetic, Tim Wilson, vice president of Intel Design Engineering Group and general manager of SoC design, confirmed that the P core and E core architecture of Meteor Lake are not greatly improved.
Can you explain to me how different the P core and E core of Meteor Lake are compared with Raptor Lake?
Tim: there are some improvements in the micro-architecture of P core and E core in the previous generation of Raptor Lake,Meteor Lake. However, we adopted the new Intel 4 process when we launched Meteor Lake. In general, we tend to reduce architectural risks when introducing new processes. Once we have achieved a stable process, we tend to make greater leaps by improving the architecture. Therefore, because this is a new big node update for us, and we can also gain the energy efficiency benefits of Intel 4, we have made only a few changes to the core architecture, so they are very similar to Raptor Lake's E core and P core in architecture.
Can you give us a detailed description of the technical differences between traditional E-cores and low-power E-cores?
Tim: first of all, in Meteor Lake, the E core in the computing module and the LPE core in the SoC module use the same architecture. But the difference is that we optimize them differently for different tasks. The E core in the computing module is optimized for higher performance and multithreaded tasks, while the LPE core in the SoC module is optimized for low power consumption and tasks that do not require the complete computing power of the P / E core in the computing module. Therefore, from an architectural point of view, they are the same, but from an optimization and per watt performance point of view, they are different.
The I / O module is built by TSMC N6, is it a technical problem or a cost problem?
Tim: what I want to say is that as an engineer, the most interesting problems to solve are the technical ones, and the (most) boring ones are the cost problems and similar problems that we have to solve. Of course, this must be considered at some point. As you said, IO modules based on TSMC N6 require high-voltage type transistors with a more mature and stable process, and many types of chips have been shown to be able to use this process. We can take advantage of this advantage effectively and at a lower cost.
So we already have the basic module, which needs to integrate other modules as an intermediate. What process is it made of?
Tim: this is an Intel node, which we call 1227 nodes, and you probably don't remember that name because it's not a well-known node. As you said, this is a passive switch, that is, there are no active devices on the node. Its function is basically to provide a "wire" between the blocks placed on it, and to use a miniature connector as a base.
Intel unveiled the latest Meteor Lake processor at its innovation event on September 20 and detailed a series of new features of Meteor Lake, such as integrated NPU, an AI power management system, a 15% increase in battery life, and its split module architecture, using Intel 4 technology for the first time.
In June, Intel announced a major upgrade to the Core brand, dividing it into the new Intel Core Ultra for the flagship and the Intel Core processor brand for mainstream products.
Intel said that the upcoming Meteor Lake processor is a revolutionary generation of products, from which the brand will use a whole new way of naming. The CTOnews.com is named as follows:
Thanks to the advanced Foveros 3D packaging technology, Meteor Lake adopts a separate module architecture, which divides the entire processor into functional partitions of computing modules, IO modules, SoC modules and graphics modules, bringing about revolutionary architectural changes in Intel client SoC in the past 40 years.
The processor uses a 3D high-performance hybrid architecture consisting of performance cores (Redwood Cove) and energy efficiency cores (Crestmont) and low power efficiency cores. Intel says it has achieved an excellent energy consumption ratio in the history of PC processors and integrated neural network processing units (NPU) into PC processors for the first time, accelerating the popularity of artificial intelligence.
