Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, September 28 (Xinhua)-- Cloud storage service provider Backblaze has released solid state disk (SSD) failure statistics for the first and second quarters of 2023, which are more reliable than mechanical hard drives (HDD).

CTOnews.com reminder: Backblaze officials made it clear that the sample size is not enough to reflect the real situation, and the relevant conclusions are only based on available data.

Backblaze began using SSD in the repository in the fourth quarter of 2018, with 2200 at the end of 2021, 2558 in 2022, and 3144 SSD on its servers on June 30, 2023.

Backblaze indicates that in the actual usage scenario, the hard disk not only loads the storage service, but also stores log files and temporary storage server files. According to server activity, boot disk reads, writes, deletes files every day, and so on.

This data also excludes some abnormal values. For example, the average annual failure rate (AFR) of Seagate 240GB SSDSCKKB240GZR is 829.55%. At the beginning of the year, there were two devices of this model, but one failed shortly after installation. Other models continue to run at full power, which means their AFR is 0%, which doesn't make any sense.

The company said representative statistics would be based on a sample of at least 100 SSD over a 10000-day operation. However, you will find that the annual failure rate of SSD is about 1%, while the annual failure rate of HDD is more than 2%.
