Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com September 28 news, although the 2nm advanced semiconductor chip has not yet been put into production, but the semiconductor foundry equipment competition has begun. In order to ensure the smooth deployment of 2nm process technology, TSMC, Samsung and Rapidus have all started the competition in the upstream equipment field.
Deployment: TSMC announced on September 12 that it would acquire a 10% stake in Intel subsidiary IMS Nanofabrication for no more than $432.8 million.
IMS specializes in the development and production of electron beam lithography machines, which are widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, optical components production, MEMS manufacturing and so on.
Industry experts believe that TSMC's acquisition of IMS will ensure the development of key equipment technologies to meet the commercial supply needs of 2nm.
Samsung: Samsung previously acquired a 3% stake in ASML and deepened the cooperation between the two companies. Samsung is preparing to introduce the next generation of high numerical aperture EUV lithography, with a prototype expected to be unveiled later this year and put into commercial use next year, according to the report.
Rapidus: as for the semiconductor newcomer Rapidus, it is very important to get the support of ASML, because EUV is an important technology for mass production of chips below 5-7nm.
CTOnews.com Note: ASML will establish a technical support base in Hokkaido, Japan in 2024, and send about 50 engineers to assist in setting up EUV lithography equipment on the pilot production line of Rapidus's 2nm chip factory to provide debugging, maintenance and inspection assistance.
TSMC: TSMC's goal is to produce N2 technology by 2025. Reports in June showed that TSMC went all out to prepare for the trial production of 2nm chips.
In July, TSMC's supply chain revealed that TSMC had informed equipment suppliers to start delivering 2nm-related machinery from the third quarter of the following year.
In September, media reported that TSMC had set up a special 2nm task force to achieve risk production next year and start mass production in 2025.
Samsung: in June, Samsung announced its latest foundry technology innovation and business strategy, and announced detailed plans and performance levels for mass production of the 2nm process.
Samsung plans to apply 2nm technology to mobile applications by 2025 and expand to HPC and automotive electronics in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
Rapidus: the company plans to trial produce 2nm chips in 2025 and start mass production in 2027.
In July, Rapidus President Dunyi Koike said that running a trial production line in 2025 and starting mass production in 2027 was an ambitious goal, but progress was on track. He pointed out that once the company's 2nm process products are put into mass production, the unit price will be ten times that of logic semiconductors currently produced in Japan.
