On Wednesday, local time, Microsoft Technology Director Kevin Kevin Scott said it is now easier to get Nvidia GPU chips for artificial intelligence training, which is an improvement from a few months ago.

The supply of Nvidia GPU chips is gradually opening up, Scott said at the CodeConference conference in Dana Point, Calif., on Wednesday. Since Microsoft-supported OpenAI launched ChatGPT chat robot at the end of last year, there has been a great demand for GPU chips in the market.

Microsoft, Google and other technology companies have been rapidly incorporating generative artificial intelligence technology into their products and selling related features to customers. The training and deployment of underlying artificial intelligence models mainly rely on Nvidia's GPU chips, which leads to a shortage of chips.

Nvidia said last month that it expected revenue to grow 170 per cent year-on-year in the current quarter. The company's control of the artificial intelligence chip market has sent gross margins soaring to 70 per cent from 44 per cent a year ago. Nvidia shares are up 190% so far this year, far outpacing other companies in the s & p 500.

Earlier, in an interview, Scott said one of his duties was to control Microsoft's GPU budget. He called it a "bad job" and "has been painful for five years".

"things are much better now than when we last talked," Scott said on Wednesday. " He said that at that time, the technology of generative artificial intelligence was still very new and aroused widespread public concern.

The increase in chip supply "makes it less scary for me to choose between so many conflicting jobs," he said.

Nvidia's chief financial officer, Colette Kress, told analysts on an earnings call last month that Nvidia's supply is expected to increase every quarter next year.

Microsoft provides Azure cloud computing services for OpenAI's artificial intelligence. Similarweb, a website analytics platform, said in a blog post that ChatGPT traffic declined month by month for three months in a row. Meanwhile, Microsoft plans to start selling Microsoft365 Copilot, an office suite, to large organizations that subscribe to its productivity software from November.

Scott declined to comment on Microsoft's development of custom artificial intelligence chips, but he highlighted the company's internal chip work. Microsoft has previously worked with Qualcomm to develop SurfacePC chips based on ARM architecture.

"I can't prove anything, but what I want to say is that we have invested a lot in chips, which is what we have been doing for years," Scott said. "what we need to do is to make sure we play the cards we have and make the best choice in how to build these systems. and in the past few years, the best choice has been Nvidia."
