CTOnews.com, September 27 (Xinhua) owners of Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS cars in the United States will soon be able to use the L3 driving assist function Drive Pilot in their luxury cars, and Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker in the United States to be allowed to operate L3-class self-driving cars.

Mercedes-Benz, which will launch the Drive Pilot in the US by the end of 2023, ahead of all its competitors, including Tesla, announced pricing and other information today.

Mercedes-Benz launched the Drive Pilot system in Germany last year and has now confirmed that it will be launched in California and Nevada. Some EQS models will be equipped with the system by the end of 2023, and more S-Class and EQS cars will be equipped with the system in early 2024.

Subscriptions are required to use Drive Pilot, which costs $2500 for the first year (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 18275 yuan), and pricing for the next few years has not yet been announced.

Mercedes-Benz's Drive Pilot leads Tesla in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) certification. The Autopilot--Autopilot is an L2-class system, while the FSD beta is L2 +. The SAE-certified L3 Auxiliary driving system can drive automatically when activated, but the driver must take over immediately after the vehicle sounds the alarm. SAE added that L3 certified cars can only drive themselves under certain conditions and can only run if all conditions are met.

Mercedes-Benz said that after activating the L3 system, additional functions will be provided on the central control screen, where drivers can browse the web, use the YouTube app to watch movies and play mini games.

Mercedes-Benz claims that the Drive Pilot uses a more powerful positioning system than the GPS, with inch accuracy, lidar, cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, as well as a digital high-definition map that provides 3D images of roads.

Drive Pilot will be updated regularly through back-end data centers, but the system currently only supports speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, which is likely to disappoint many car owners. But this is a regulatory requirement that Mercedes-Benz can raise it to 70 miles (112.65 kilometers) per hour when allowed by federal and state laws.
