It is reported that Microsoft added CASO (Cross Adapter Scan-Out) technology that can improve the graphics performance of notebook computers in DirectX 11 and 12 included in Windows 11, so that related devices can play games faster and more smoothly.

CTOnews.com learned after inquiry that the current drivers of the three major graphics card manufacturers, Nvidia, AMD, and Intel, all support CASO technology, which simplifies the steps of the graphics card to transmit the game picture to the middle of the screen, can improve the fluency of the game screen, and reduce latency, thereby enhancing the overall game experience.

Notebooks that emphasize graphics performance are usually equipped with set display and unique display, which are generally used in games, thus making the game run more smoothly. When the unique computing power is not needed, the system will switch to more energy-efficient integrated graphics cards to reduce power consumption, make the use of laptops more flexible and adapt to different types of users.

The specific notebook will call the integrated graphics card and independent graphics card at the same time, the integrated graphics card is responsible for handling daily work, while the only one is responsible for heavy graphics work.

Although this approach can improve performance at a certain level, the disadvantage is that the relevant workflow involves two replications of rasterized rendering, one from independent or external GPU to shared resources, and the other from shared resources to GPU, so that the advantages of independent graphics cards cannot be brought into full play.

The CASO technology added by Microsoft in DirectX 11 and 12 can simplify the above content transmission process, with only one copy, the relevant content can be directly output to the screen, resulting in a better frame rate and lower latency, thus improving the performance of the notebook.

Microsoft has tested CASO technology in popular PC games. It is said that FPS can be improved by an average of 16% and latency can be reduced by 27% on average, which means that notebooks using CASO are more stable and have stronger performance release. Microsoft said that CASO has been integrated into Windows 11 and will be enabled by default in supported devices.
