Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens for selling melons and kinja clues in the back row! CTOnews.com, September 27, according to the World wide Web, citing Yonhap news agency, the United States is expected to indefinitely extend the exemption period for South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to import US chip equipment from their factories in China.

Tuyuan Pexels last year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix received authorization from the U.S. Department of Commerce to supply equipment for chip production to factories in China within a year without having to apply for an additional license, an exemption that expires in October.

The US Commerce Department has discussed with South Korean chipmakers the details of the use of US chip devices in China, and the US will release the news as early as this week, Yonhap news agency quoted unnamed sources as saying.

The report also said that the U.S. Department of Commerce will update its list of "proven end users" to specify which entities have access to which technologies exported from the United States, in order to allow Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to continue to use specific US chip manufacturing equipment. If the two South Korean companies are added to the list of "certified end users", they do not need to apply for separate export licenses when purchasing US chip manufacturing equipment.

Samsung Electronics manufactures NAND flash memory in Xi'an, China, SK Hynix manufactures DRAM chips in Wuxi and NAND flash memory in Dalian. CTOnews.com notes that TrendForce statistics show that by the end of June, the two companies together controlled nearly 70 per cent of the global DRAM and 50 per cent of the global NAND flash market.
