CTOnews.com, September 27, according to the Nikkei News, ASML, a large Dutch semiconductor manufacturing equipment manufacturer, will build a new technical support base in Hokkaido, Japan by the second half of 2024.

Reported that Japan's Rapidus company is striving to mass produce the most advanced semiconductors, ASML will provide Rapidus with factory construction and maintenance inspection and other assistance, to 2028 after the Japanese domestic staff increased by 40%.

ASML ranks first in the world in the field of lithography equipment that undertakes the main processes of semiconductor manufacturing, and is the only manufacturer in the world that can produce EUV lithography machines. EUV is the equipment needed for mass production of 5~7nm cutting-edge semiconductors, so the support of ASML is very important for Japanese semiconductors.

ASML will build a technical support base around Qianshi City, Hokkaido, and about 50 technicians will install EUV lithography equipment on the semiconductor trial production line built by Rapidus to provide assistance for plant construction, maintenance and inspection.

The report also said that American applied materials companies will also increase their staff in Japan by 60% in the next few years. Colin Research and Development (LamResearch) is considering new facilities in Hokkaido.

CTOnews.com Note: Rapidus was founded in August 2022, jointly funded by eight Japanese companies, including Toyota, Sony, NTT, NEC, Softbank Corp., Denso Denso, Meixia, and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, with a capital contribution of 7.3 billion yen (currently about 358 million yuan). In addition, the Japanese government has also provided a subsidy of 70 billion yen (currently about 3.437 billion yuan) as a research and development budget. The company plans to install chip equipment and start trial production in December 2024, with the goal of mass production of 2nm chips within four years (2028 at the latest).
