CTOnews.com, September 27 (Xinhua) according to a statistical report released by Japanese software company Patent Result, BYD applied for nearly 13000 patents in the past 20 years from 2003 to 2022, while Tesla applied for only 863, 15 times that of BYD in the same period.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that more than half of BYD's patents are related to batteries, highlighting the differences between BYD and other automakers. Other car companies mainly through outsourcing procurement, although they can reduce costs, but the ability to resist risk is poor, while BYD uses in-house self-development and manufacturing, can patent to build a moat.

It is reported that BYD is among the best in terms of the number of effective patents and overall strength. Closely watched patents include "curbing wear and heat inside the battery pack while driving" and "effectively preventing the accumulation of gases discharged by a single battery pack in the battery pack" and so on.

Although Tesla has applied for only 863 patents in the past 20 years, Tesla has developed a large number of open source software, mainly related to communications between charging infrastructure and electric vehicles and driving. this shows the different priorities of the two car companies.
