Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com September 26 news, Mercedes-Benz launched a new payment system, so that drivers can pay for fuel and other goods through fingerprint sensors.
While fingerprint sensors aren't new in cars, Mercedes claims they're the first in-car payment system. The system, called Mercedes Pay +, was developed in partnership with MasterCard and allows drivers to quickly pay for a variety of products using secure biometric two-factor authentication.
Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system from 2020 onwards can use the system, and other vehicles can choose to install the sensor additionally.
The system initially only supports more than 3600 filling stations in Germany, but Mercedes says it will expand to other European markets in the future.
The system works by automatically connecting to "networked service stations," where the system automatically calculates the maximum total cost based on the current fuel price and the amount of fuel that needs to be filled. Once the driver fills up, they can return to the car and pay using the fingerprint sensor, and the system sends the driver a receipt.
About half of 18-to 39-year-olds "order and pay for services and goods directly through infotainment displays," Mercedes-Benz said, according to German market research firm GfK. It looks like the system could also support EV charging in the future, as the same survey shows that "60% of people will pay for fuel or EV charging directly through the car."
CTOnews.com notes that while the system is the first in a car to allow drivers to make native in-car payments, it's not the automaker's first foray into fingerprint sensors. Back in 2002, the Audi A8 offered a fingerprint sensor that could be used to start the car. The 2008 Citroen C6 Pallas also offers a fingerprint sensor that can be used to check email. In 2018 Bentley introduced secure biometric storage compartments in Bentley Tim Yue and Mulliner models, while Hyundai Sundar also provided fingerprint unlocking in Chinese models.
