A study led by Harvard University found that hundreds of consultants at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which uses generative artificial intelligence GPT-4, performed better in terms of frequency, speed and quality of tasks, improving their performance by 40 per cent compared with their peers who did not use AI.

The study also found that AI has a balancing effect in terms of skills. The consultants with the worst initial performance showed the most significant performance improvement when incorporating AI into the workflow, with an average increase of 43 per cent. At the same time, even the best-performing consultants have seen some performance gains, albeit relatively small.

The study found that individuals who use AI for tasks beyond their capabilities are more likely to make mistakes by trusting AI too much.

In addition, the study found two emerging AI usage patterns among the company's skilled consultants, which the researchers call "centaur" and "cyber" behavior. These people have found a way to seamlessly integrate AI and human work, taking full advantage of their respective strengths. Centaurs maintain a clear distinction between human and AI tasks, making choices based on their perception of their respective strengths and abilities. Cyberger, by contrast, combines humans with machines in most tasks.

CTOnews.com notes that the study also found that unexpected tasks, such as creative generation, are relatively simple for AI, while tasks that seem simple to machines, such as basic math, pose a challenge to large language models (LLM).
