CTOnews.com Sept. 26, Samsung officially announced that it will work with AMD to use vRAN to accelerate network transformation.

Samsung said that with the accession of AMD, operators will have a wider choice to build high-capacity, energy-efficient and performance-oriented network systems.

It leverages cloud-based architecture and software to handle RAN workloads, making the network more flexible, agile, and cost-effective, leveraging the power of 5G, AI, and edge computing. Open RAN supports standard interfaces, while vRAN separates hardware and software and introduces cloud architecture into RAN, further enhancing flexibility and innovation.

According to reports, the two companies have completed several rounds of tests in Samsung Labs to "verify high-capacity and carrier-grade performance using FDD band and TDD Massive MIMO broadband, while significantly reducing power consumption."

In this partnership, Samsung uses multi-function vRAN software integrated with the AMD EPYC 8004 processor. The test results show that these new FDD and TDD Massive MIMO bands can achieve higher performance and significantly reduce power consumption.

Samsung said: Samsung will continue to work with AMD to promote 5G vRAN and Open RAN acceleration and promote innovation in next-generation networks.

According to Samsung, its vRAN solution "allows operators to perform network functions and provide services that are impossible or difficult to achieve with traditional RAN. Our vRAN conforms to the O-RAN standard and can run 2G, 4G and 5G networks, as well as 4G and 5G at the same time. Virtualized RAN is eco-friendly and can reduce power consumption by reducing or turning off the energy required on antennas, amplifiers and base stations."

In February this year, Samsung announced the release of the 5G vRAN 3.0 update and confirmed that it plans to deploy to the North American market in the first half of 2023. Samsung hopes to use the United States as a starting point to provide its next-generation virtual RAN capabilities to global operators.

The 5G vRAN 3.0 technology includes a range of new "smart" features and has been optimized to meet the needs of forward-looking operators. According to the roadmap, the company also demonstrated its vRAN proven intelligent network capabilities.

Samsung's vRAN 3.0 features advanced features, including increased bandwidth support for large-scale MIMO radios, analysis of hourly traffic patterns to optimize network operating conditions, and the use of "sleep mode" (sleep mode) to automate the network to save energy consumption.
